The Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor



Patrick Shrum is a former United States Marine Corps serviceman who was assigned with the HMX-1 (Marine One) Presidential Helicopter Squadron. He also served as a detective in the Redondo Beach Police Department. A decorated law enforcement officer, Patrick Shrum received the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor, the highest award any police officer can receive.

The Medal of Valor is awarded to public safety officers such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency services officers, civil defense officers, employees of the courts and corrections, and other public safety officers as determined by the United States Attorney General. The award was created by the US Congress in 2001 to honor the commitment of public safety officers who risk their lives to protect American citizens.

Those who receive the Medal of Valor, whether living or deceased, have served their agency with valor, demonstrated exceptional courage, and risk. To be eligible for the Medal of Valor, candidates must be nominated by their agency’s CEO and supported by the recommendation of a bipartisan Medal of Valor Review Board and a citation from the US Attorney General. Patrick Shrum received the Medal of Valor Award and received a wide spectrum of recognition For his bravery and heroism from his Mayor, the State assembly, 2 State Senators and a Congressman to name a few.
